THROWBACK THURSDAY | EMBRACING THE WEIRDNESS

Can I tell you a secret? Okay, here it goes. I love Throwback Thursday. And since today is Thursday, I'm bringing back an old post. There are a lot of new faces around here these days and I really don't want you to get the impression that I'm totally normal (because it's so not true), so I'm sharing this post again with you. Last year, a friend told me I should share my weirdness with you all. She obviously knows me well enough to know I wouldn't be offended that she discovered how weird I am.

Honestly, "You are so weird. I love you." is a common statement for me to hear from my friends. It's not like I try to hide it. I've embraced the weirdness, the awkwardness, and the overall craziness that is called Meg. #YOLO ;)

// I like to go into Target and put on superhero masks //

1 | Sometimes I talk like Marcel the shell. My best friend pointed it out once. It's just a word or a phrase where I catch Marcel's monotone, croaky snail voice.

2 | I am a complete nerd. I love shows like Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Merlin. BBC for the win! And I heart all things Narnia, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. Nerds unite! ;)

3 | I like eating goldfish and m&ms together for a snack. Some people are super grossed out by that, but it's the perfect sweet & salty mix!! So don't be hatin'.

4 | I only wash my hair twice a week. This just got real, y'all. My hair doesn't get dirty/show dirt very quickly. Plus, it takes too much time to fix, so less is better in this case. Please still be my friend?

5 | I turn into a 2 year old after 9pm. It just happens. The day is coming to a close and I turn into a hyper/exhausted toddler. It's about as crazy as I get in life.

6 | I am 26 years old and still terrified of the dark. When I'm coming home late at night and have to turn off the basement lights before heading upstairs, I flip the switch off and bolt up the stairs as fast as possible. The burglar that has obviously been waiting in my house for HOURS could get me!

7 | Speaking of being terrified, I'm also still scared of someone hiding under my bed or in my closet. I blame this on my brother and my mom growing up. My mom LOVES scaring people. After she and my dad got married, my mom would hide in tiny corners of their apartment and scare the living daylights out of my dad when he came home from work (he's super jumpy.) He finally had to ask her to stop...so when they had kids, my mom passed the scaring jobs off to my brother and myself. I can't tell you how many times my brother hid under my bed and would reach out and grab my foot as I was about to hop under the covers. Seriously traumatizing. I've been in therapy for years...

8 | I laugh at the most inappropriate times. I think laughter is my coping mechanism. A friend told me once that it's how I mask my pain, which is pretty accurate. But I almost always laugh in awkward situations and sad ones...not because i'm not sympathetic...i'm actually very sympathetic, but sometimes my first reaction is to laugh because I don't know what else to do! Gosh, I'm so awkward.

9 | Sometimes I like to run up and down the Christmas aisles at Hobby Lobby while quoting lines from Elf. What? You don't do that? You have not lived.

10 | I wear my emotions on my face. I have been told that I have the greatest facial expressions of all time...and by greatest, I do not mean "cutest" or "most attractive." Think jennifer lawrence but way less adorable...hey, at least it's entertaining! ;)

Weeeeell, that's all you get for now! Can't be telling you all my weirdness at once or you may never come back! Muahahahaha.

SO WHAT ABOUT YOU? WHAT MAKES YOU WEIRD?

MUSIC & LYRICS | JUDAH AND THE LION

Man, oh man. My best friend introduced me to Judah and the Lion about a year ago, and I saw them in concert in April when they opened for Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. It was SUCH a fun night. I feel like their music would make you feel southern even if you weren't from the south. It makes you want to sing, clap, dance, and become best friends with everyone around you.

They have a new album called "Kids These Days" coming out on September 9th, and I am counting down the days! Their music video for "Rich Kids" came out on my birthday and I'm convinced it was really meant to be my birthday gift from them. ;) We're BFFs, obvi. This one is such a great tune about life and priorities and where true value really lies. Give it a listen and share with your friends!

WHAT'VE YOU HAD ON REPEAT THIS WEEK?

Q & A | THIS COULD GET AWKWARD

Hello! Today I'm doing something brand new, and it makes me a little nervous!! However, I'm learning to be brave this year, so I'm going for it. I'm opening up a big round of Q & A with me, Meg, the girl behind the blog. I feel like I share a lot on the blog about most of my life, my every day, things I'm learning, and the adventures I take, but I'm sure there are questions you may like to ask that I have never answered!

So here's your mission: Ask any questions you want. What would you want to talk about if we were hanging out at the park or grabbing a cup of coffee? Maybe you have blogging questions, or you're curious about how long it takes to dry my hair, or what I'm currently reading during my quiet times, or "are you as awkward as you look?" (hint: the answer is "yes"), or which Disney princess is my favorite. Get creative and ask the questions that have been on your mind!

Submit your questions in the comments OR fill out the form below. I can't wait to see what y'all come up with, and I'm excited to get to know you better in the process!  I'll be answering your questions sometime next week, so stay tuned! :)

XOXO.

WEEKEND UPDATE.

RECAPS
-- Mug swap 2014. I received my mug swap last week, and my sweet new friend was SO thoughtful in her giving. Can't wait to show you all the goodies in the link-up next week!! I also got my mug swap package mailed out to its own secret destination.

-- Google chat. I've mentioned that Sam, Beth, and I do Google Hangouts once a month, but what's even better is we chat just about every day. It's fun getting to talk about random things happening throughout the day, brainstorming projects together, and just getting to know each other a little better. Every single day I am thankful for those friendships.

-- Disney art. My brother and sister-in-law sent over the Frozen art book last week, and I squealed with joy.  My art book collection is coming along very nicely. I have so much reading to do. :)  I've decided that if I could go back to school for anything, I'd want to go back and become a concept artist. It is just the coolest thing!!

-- Identity crisis. Okay, that's a little dramatic, but here's the story. I have always thought I was an extrovert...all the tests tell me I am. I love people, I'm outgoing most of the time, I love doing social things...but I was thinking about it a lot this week and came to the conclusion that I am, in fact, an introvert. Both of my parents and some other friends confirmed it for me. I had an identity crisis for about five minutes and then got over it. I've come to the conclusion that I'm an extroverted introvert (nobody put me in a box.) I love spending time with people, but I'm also just as happy staying home alone for an entire weekend and watching movies by myself. There ya go. What are you?

AUGUST CRUSHES.

1 | GAP Stripe Henley Dress
I am all about comfort and style mixed into one, and this Henley dress fits the bill. It looks SO comfortable and perfect for beach vacations or a casual day out on the town. Also, I am loving stripes these days...especially navy and white.

2 | Patagonia Atom Pack
I feel like this pack would be so great for travel, a day hike, a camera bag, and the every day. I've actually already ordered one to try...it was half off from Patagonia! What a steal. The few Patagonia items I have received as gifts over the years have held up incredibly well and will last for a long time. It's definitely a product that I trust.

3 | Mini Jambox from Jawbone
If I had 100 bucks to throw around, this Jambox would be so fun to have. I love listening to my music all over the house, and I usually use my phone for playing some tunes while I am moving around the house getting different projects done. This would also be super fun to have at the beach or picnics or backyard BBQs. The options are limitless!

4 | Warby Parket Piper Sunglasses
I bought my last pair of prescription glasses from Warby Parker and love them!! I drool over their sunglasses collection every now and then and these frames recently caught my eye. I love the way the light comes through the frames and highlights the golden amber color.

5 | Morning Fog Print
Oh my stars. A friend recently introduced me to the work of Brittney Lee and I immediately became a huge fan. She works for Disney, people, and if you know me at all, you know Disney is one of my love languages. ;) This Morning Fog print is one of my favorites from her shop. It's magical and dreamy and looks like the perfect spot for some good book reading and a cup of coffee.

Q & A | MEET RACHEL

Today I get to introduce you to Rachel of Oh Simple Thoughts! She's been hanging out on my sidebar this month, and I hope you've had time to visit her sweet blog. She is co-hosting a blog retreat in October in my home state, and I'm so excited that I get to attend! It's going to be so fun to meet all those bloggers in person and be friends in real life. :) Anyway, without further ado, here's Rachel!

When did you start blogging and why?
I started blogging in highschool, sort of. I would say I got more serious about it when Ben (my husband) and I got engaged my senior year of college, and only set out to update friends and family on our engagement and marriage. Since the beginning of this year my blog has become my creative outlet and my stress relief. It has led me to a whole community of Godly women that I know call best friends, and has pushed me closer to the Lord. Crazy how things change!

Where do you live, and what is one of your favorite things do to in your city?
My husband and I live in Mississippi in our college town (Mississippi State University). We both went to State, and my hubby is working on his PhD so we are still here a little longer, and I love it. My favorite thing is to go to the Farmer's Market down the street from our house on Saturdays and then to enjoy a nice breakfast at a local fav, I always rotate my favorite coffee shop, and biscuit shop (which is also where I work part time).

What has been your favorite recipe this summer?
Salsa. I have made it every couple weeks and kept it in the fridge. It is so easy because you just blend it all in a food processor and your are done. I give it to friends in mason jars, and put it on everything! So fresh and so yummy!

What are some of your favorite hobbies?
I LOVE design. From typefaces to pretty colors I love it all. I have really enjoyed teaching myself to use Photoshop and Illustrator, and I find that creating pretty things brings me a lot of joy. I also love to be in the kitchen, it is my happy place and helps me relieve stress from a hard day.

Current favorite song/band?
I would say this answer will always be Needtobreathe, I am loving their new album and Ben surprised me with tickets to see them live in Birmingham (this will be my 4th concert) and I am so giddy about it!

There ya go, folks! Don't you want to head on over to Rachel's blog now and become BFFs? I thought so. :) If you are interested in becoming part of the Rivers and Roads team, use the code HELLO for 30% off all advertising options!

LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES.

Confession: I love movies.

I love going to movies, I love watching them at home, I love watching them by myself and with friends, and I watch my favorites over and over again. Fall is quickly approaching, which means a new movie season is about to begin! There are a few that I'm really excited to see in theaters and others that I'll probably wait to Redbox. I wanted to share the trailers for some of the movies I'm really looking forward to this year!

1 | The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

2 | Unbroken

3 | The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

4 | Interstellar

5 | Into The Woods

6 | Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

WEEKEND UPDATE.

RECAPS
1 | I got to hang out with my favorite kiddos on Saturday night. We played "lava monster" and jumped from pillow to pillow on the floor while trying not to fall in the lava AKA the carpet. I love kids' imaginations.

2 | Oh my stars. I binge watched the first season of The Paradise this weekend. I was on pins and needles the whole time because I didn't know what was going to happen!! I kept messaging my best friend (who watched the show right before me) my reactions to scenes every five minutes.

3 | My mama and I went to see The Hundred Foot Journey, which I thought was great!! I love Hellen Mirren, fun accents, and watching people cook delicious food.

CURRENTLY | VOL. 2

LISTENING TO | Johhnyswim. My friend Laura, who I call Luna, introduced me to this cute couple this week and I can't stop listening to them!! They sound so great together.

WATCHING | Two friends just got me hooked on another BBC show: The Paradise. I binge watched the first three episodes last night while I was working on other projects. Don't judge me. ;) I seriously love all things British, and BBC shows never seem to fail me.

READING | I'm still on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but I'm hoping to finish that in the next two weeks so that I can start The Warden and the Wolf King by Andrew Peterson!

EATING | I basically always crave chocolate. It may or may not be a problem. ;) Right now, I am loving Lindt Intense Orange dark chocolate. Yummmmmmmm. Also, it's dark chocolate so it's good for me. Right? Right. :)

PLANNING FOR | The beach!! I am so excited. My best friends from college and I are headed to Destin for a long Labor Day weekend. I've started making my packing list, which includes lots of sunscreen for my poor fair skin. ;) I can't wait to spend a weekend with those girls. They mean the world to me, but we don't get to see each other all the time, so I treasure these trips we take together.

WHAT'S ON YOUR "CURRENTLY" LIST?

8.14.2014

MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES.

Two weeks ago I left work on a Friday and headed to the mountains of North Carolina. My family and some friends were staying at a cabin in the mountains, and I went up for the weekend to celebrate my mama's birthday and my parents' anniversary. The drive was breathtaking. I basically wanted to stop every five seconds to take pictures of the rolling mountain ranges, but I realized it would take me six hours instead of three to arrive at my destination if I kept stopping. So I just stared instead and tried to take it all in without running off the road. :)

We were staying near Franklin, but also spent a day in Highlands, which is gorgeous!! We ate yummy sandwiches at Mountain Fresh Grocery, stopped to look at waterfalls, shopped in the rain, played the longest game ever of Settlers of Catan, and witnessed the most glorious sunset. In advance, I'd like to say sorry I'm not sorry for all of the sunset pictures. I will forever be that person that is in awe of every single day's end.

GAP giveaway.

There's nothing like updating your wardrobe for fall.  I absolutely love picking up some new jeans and a few sweaters to kick off this glorious season!  While fall is not quite here yet (and there's really no reason to rush summer out the door), it still would be silly not to take advantage of all of the back-to-school sales going on! And just to help you out with that fall wardrobe shopping, I've partnered with Betsy and a few other bloggers to offer one lucky reader a little shopping spree at GAP!

One winner will receive:
$100 to GAP
$30 to Starbucks (because you need to fuel up for that shopping trip!)

This awesome giveaway wouldn't be possible without partnering with some fabulous blogging friends! Each of these girls is so sweet and generous, and I hope you take a moment to stop by each of their blogs and check them out!

SPONSORS' SUMMER PLAYLIST.

I absolutely love highlighting my sponsors each month, and this time is no exception. As y'all know, I love me some good music, so I asked my sweet friends what they have had on their playlists this summer! Check out some of their favorite tunes!

Amy | Taking Steps Home
I've been in a folksy kind of mood lately, reflective, deep...haunting even (weird for summer right?) and these songs ("you never need nobody" by The Lone Bellow, "morning stars" by Farewell Milwaukee, and "cherry wine" by Hozier) just hit that bright spot in me. They are full of some raw passion that is contagious.

Rachel | Oh Simple Thoughts
Hurricane by Mindy Smith I just love the sound of it and how relaxing the melody is. When I need to focus and get to work fast paced music doesn't cut it, I need mellow, easy going music to get into my work flow. :)
Christina | Sweet Lavender Bake Shoppe
Eeeeeeep I just had to listen to these again (you know, just to make sure they really were my favorites right now, hehe)! Each of these songs really feels like "summer" to me, for some strange reason and make me so summery happy right now! Each one has such a nice uppity beat and immediately gets me in the mood to smile and sing along! Bastille, "Weight of Living, Pt.1", All Sons and Daughters, "Oh, How I Need You", and Vampire Weekend, "Hannah Hunt".

Allison | Allison Ramsing
Difference Maker - NEEDTOBREATHE. I was introduced to NEEDTOBREATHE by my twin in Alpha Omicron Pi (my sorority) while I was visiting her in Texas in 2010.  After she introduced me to them I listened to The Outsider album constantly. NEEDTOBREATHE released a new album this year and it is just as good.  I can't get enough of the song Difference Maker.  This song continuously reminds me that we can make a difference and are called to make a difference. We can make a difference in our household, our work, our blogs, our community, and so much more, for God's kingdom.  How are you going to make a difference today?

Samantha | Elah Tree
"Fix My Eyes" For King and Country.
This song fills me with joy and inspires me to have affinity for life and people. It makes me want to get up and dance!

Haley | The Blue Dishes
"Classic" by MKTO is one of my favorite summer songs - it's the perfect for hot days with the windows rolled down. I also love that they throw a tribute to some of the most classic women from the decades - not many pop songs mention Audrey Hepburn & Beyonce side by side!

Laura | All The Best, Laura Jean
Stolen Dance by Milky Chance-How can you not find this song oh so catchy? It makes me want to put on some dancing shoes and enjoy life.

AUGUST GOALS.

I started making monthly goals for myself a couple of months ago, but I have not been sharing them with you! I know we are already halfway through August, and I have already completed some of the items on my list, but I wanted to share them with you so that it will hold me accountable! Once a month, Beth, Samantha, and I get together on Google Hangouts to talk blogging goals and dreams. Sam is really great at asking me what my goals are or making me write them down if I haven't already. :) This new habit really does help with keeping my blog life more organized and on track.

1 | Update all blog pages
I want all of my blog "pages" to look uniform, and I have been working on that over the past couple of weeks. I've got a little more work to do!

2 | Re-design blog
As you can see, the majority of this has already been done! Last year, the amazing Kiki of In Its Time did the first major overhaul of my blog design and I loved it!! She is great.  I got on a roll one night and stayed up until about 1a.m. finishing most of the re-design!

3 | Do a reader survey
I'm nosey and want to know more about y'all! ;)

4 | Complete more chapters of the Blog Life course
I truly am loving A Beautiful Mess' Blog Life course...it's just finding time to sit down and complete more chapters that is the tough part. I'm hoping to have a few more done by the end of the month.

5 | Take a Skillshare class
I am actually taking Skillshare classes for my job and would also love to take some design and hand-lettering classes for fun! Have you taken any Skillshare classes? Which ones have been your favorites?

6 | Open an Etsy shop
This has been on the to-do list for a LONG time, and to be honest, I'm not sure it will get done this month either. (Sorry Sam!) Currently my prints are for sale via Society6, but I would love to get them on Etsy and have them available as downloads for purchase.  Working full-time during the day and blogging at night doesn't leave me enough time to run a full-fledged shop where I can print, package, and ship prints on a regular basis. So I think digital downloads may be the way to go for a while!

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS THIS MONTH?

8.11.2014

WEEKEND UPDATE.

RECAPS
1 | There's a new Mac in the house. After 7 long years, my poor Macbook just wasn't cutting it. I would sit around for hours just trying to complete a couple of things and would constantly get the spinning rainbow of death. Last week I finally replaced it and it was totally worth it. The new Macbook, named Flynn Rider, works like a dream.

2 | My 26th birthday. Thank you all so much for your sweet birthday wishes!! I felt so loved all day. A couple of my coworkers took me to lunch, and then my work surprised me with an ice cream cake when we got back! I closed out the day with homemade pizza and a Divergent movie night.

3 | World's longest yard sale. This yard sale stretches for 690 miles from Michigan to Alabama and passes over Signal Mountain in Tennessee. So my friends and I loaded up in the car and headed up the mountain to do some deal hunting.

4 | Birthday game night. My best friend came in town this weekend and my whole core group came over Saturday night to celebrate my birthday, play games, and eat ice cream cake. We played Taboo and the most hilarious rounds of Telephone Pictionary. I laughed so much my stomach hurt. I love those people and am so thankful for that community.
