HOLDERS NOT FOLDERS | COLORFUL

Dear #holdersnotfolders, we are in the final stretch of our end-of-summer series, which has tip-toed its way into autumn just a smidge. We have one week and one prompt left! Can you believe it?? I love this growing community of ours, and I'm so grateful for the ways you all encourage and build one another up. Let's keep using this little hashtag that reminds us to reach out to others and build community instead of simply folding into ourselves long after this series is over. :)

Here are a few of my favorite BOLD moments from this past week. I love the ways you captured the bold colors and bold actions that were part of your every day.

This week, your photo prompt is COLORFUL, and I honestly think you guys can knock this one out of the park. When I think of colorful these days, I think of the magical yellow aspen leaves. I cannot get enough of this Colorado autumn. Maybe your mind goes to the colorful leaves, or maybe you interpret colorful a little differently. It's really all up to you and your endless creativity. I can't wait to see how you capture those moments! Go big or go home this week, friends. ;)

HOMEWORK: Make sure you follow @oakandoats and @megmcilvaine on Instagram and get creative in the ways you show us the COLORFUL things in your life! Don't forget to #holdersnotfolders and make new friends in this community! XOXO.

WEEKEND UPDATE

RECAPS
1 | Guys, don't forget to slow down enough during your busy busy days to appreciate the tiny details. It's always the tiny details that end up being my favorite.

2 | I honestly can't complain about my work environment. I mean, come on, I get to take early morning walks taking in that scenery.

3 | Saturday was full of good friend time with Laura, catching up on life, hiking in the woods, breathing the mountain air, and feeling completely refreshed.

4 | Colorado has a much earlier and shorter autumn than Tennessee does, and I was not going to miss it. I was all heart eyes for days during our hike as I tried to take in all the beautiful shades of yellow. Who knew there were so many shades of yellow when it came to leaves? The burnt yellow color of the aspen leaves is definitely my favorite. :)

UP & AWAY

On Labor Day weekend, I experienced one of the most magical mornings of my life thus far. The best friend and I woke up before the sun, grabbed some coffee, and headed off to the park for what I hope will become a new annual tradition for me in Colorado. As we got closer to the park, I started to see them. Gigantic, colorful hot air balloons being filled and prepared to launch into the big blue sky. As we watched (and took a million photos) I couldn't stop smiling and saying "I love this so much! Everything is so pretty!" It was like the lantern scene in Tangled, except it was morning time, and I was not in a boat out on the water with Flynn Rider, and they were hot air balloons, not floating lanterns. But still! ;)

It was a morning I will not forget. I have loved making fun memories with friends in this new home of mine, and I always remind myself to treasure every moment here. I often wonder how long Jesus will keep me in Colorado. This is kind of the first time I've moved and started a job that doesn't have a set expiration date. It's an interesting place to be...the not knowing what on earth the future looks like and what it holds. That is just life, though, no matter where you live or what you're doing. It's important to me to make the most of my time here (however long that may be), to live fully, to love deeply, to make new memories and traditions while still treasuring the old, and to trust Jesus with the rest.

Have you ever been to a hot air balloon festival? Is there one near where you live? What is a new tradition you have started this year, and what are some of your favorite new memories made?

HOLDERS NOT FOLDERS | BOLD

Dear #holdersnotfolders, we just have two weeks left in our end-of-summer series, which is actually running just a smidge into autumn. :) We thought it would be fun to end the summer with a chance to think creatively, work on our photography skills, and build an even stronger community within #holdernotfolders. I love this growing community of ours, and I'm so grateful for the ways you all encourage and build one another up. Let's keep using this little hashtag that reminds us to reach out to others and build community instead of simply folding into ourselves.

Here are a few of my favorite WRITTEN moments from this past week. You guys found some really beautiful ways to capture the written things in your lives, and I absolutely loved scrolling through our little hashtag to look at them all!

This week, your photo prompt is BOLD. Maybe that means bold colors, or maybe it means making a bold move, daring to dream, or being courageous enough to try something new. It's really all up to you and your endless creativity. I can't wait to see how you capture those moments!

WEEKEND UPDATE

RECAPS
1 | I recently found a new pair of frames that I love, and they are from Firmoo. Take a look at my review for more details!

2 | Saturday afternoon was spent cuddled on the couch with Elsie girl and watching Tangled. Sometimes that is all you need.

3 | Elsie can turn anything into an adventure, which always warms my heart. We stopped off at the overlook to snap some photos of Pike's Peak at golden hour, and she decided to explore each little path she could find.

4 | Colorado days. There are good days and not so good days, but this change is teaching me a lot about who I am. Change is hard, but we all need it from time to time. It helps us grow.

FOUR TIPS FOR FOUR EYES

I've been a wearer of glasses since I was a young girl and still remember the first pair of glasses I had. They were oval with a metal frame and had those super fancy sunglasses clip-ons to protect my little blue eyes from the bright sun. (#stylin') "Super cool" wasn't really ever a phrase used to describe me then...or ever. ;) My spectacle choices have come a long way since those days, and I now tend to go for a dark and thick frame. I recently got a new lens prescription and decided it might be a good idea to update my specs so I could do things like read, and ya know, see clearly.

If you know me at all, you know I tend to do a lot of research before making decisions. Like a good boyscout, I like to be prepared, okay? I ended up with some frames from Firmoo, and honestly had a great experience with them. They provide quality frames at an incredibly affordable price and have a multitude of options to choose from! Frames for everyone! During my recent search for new glasses, I learned a few things along the way, and thought I'd share.

1 | HEAD TO THE EYE DOCTOR.
Before purchasing a new pair of specs, make sure you pay a visit to your friendly neighborhood eye doctor! You are definitely going to want an updated prescription. Make sure your doctor writes the PD (pupillary distance) on your prescription because you will need that when ordering new lenses. Your PD is the distance between each of your pupils, and it is important because it ensures that the center of your lenses are placed directly in front of your pupils. If your pupillary distance is off, your vision will also be thrown off.

2 | Pick frames that compliment the shape of your face.
I have worn a variety of frame shapes over the years, but I have finally figured out what shapes look good on my face, and which do not. For example. circular frames (AKA Harry Potter spectacles) are a no-go for me. I look ridiculous in them, while my friend Laura can totally rock them. I tend to lean towards the rectangular or square frames. This time around, I ended up with these babies, and really love how they fit my face!

3 | Do a virtual try-on.
I highly suggest doing a virtual try-on. Most online retailers now offer this as an option, and I took advantage of Firmoo's try-on feature while I was trying to decide on a pair of frames. In my case, it helped me figure out what shape and color might look better on me! It's also just kind of fun to try on a hundred pair of glasses without having to physically put them on and take them off.

4 | DISCOVER YOUR FRAME SIZE
GUYS! Sorry I yelled, but this part is maybe the most important. You need to know your frame size if you don't want glasses that are falling off your face every time you move, or if you don't want glasses that are so tight they give you an instant headache. I love that Firmoo lists the detailed measurements below each frame online. So helpful! Now you're already ahead of the game if you have an old pair of frames because you should be able to look on the inside of the temple arm to find your measurements. However, if you don't, I suggest going and trying some frames on in the store to figure out your frame size.

Do you have the privilege of needing to wear glasses the rest of your life? Have you ever tried any of Firmoo's frames? What did you think? What is your go-to frame shape? I want to know everything. Tell me all of your secrets. ;)

HOLDERS NOT FOLDERS | WRITTEN

Do you know what day it is?? Holders Not Folders day! We're moving on to our seventh week in the new Instagram challenge with #holdersnotfolders as we wrap up these summer months and head into my favorite season, autumn! We thought it would be fun to end the summer with a chance to think creatively, work on our photography skills, and build an even stronger community within #holdernotfolders. I love this growing community of ours, and I'm so grateful for the ways you all encourage and build one another up. Let's keep using this little hashtag that reminds us to reach out to others and build community instead of simply folding into ourselves.

Here are a few of my favorite NEW moments from this past week. New sights, new adventures, new seasons in life. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your world this week!

This week, your photo prompt is WRITTEN. Show us some handlettering, or books you're reading, or scripture that is speaking to you, or lyrics that make your heart soar. It's really all up to you and your endless creativity. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

INSTAGRAM TIP: CONSIDER CONSISTENCY/STYLE
One of the things I've struggled with in the past is finding consistency in my Instagram style. Do I want my photos bright and bold,  or more muted, or black and white, etc? Personally, I think that your editing style is something important to consider when looking at your Instagram feed. Your style helps to set you and your brand apart from the rest of the crowd. I edit every single one of my photos the same way, using the same filter, in order to create a kind of consistent feel for all of the photos in my feed. This helps to set a "mood" for your Instagram. I've found that I prefer my photos to be brighter and bolder. This means I tend to bump up the exposure, contrast, and saturation, and throw on my favorite filter at a low intensity (usually HB 1 or 2 in VSCO). Play around with it and figure out what style you love best!

WEEKEND UPDATE

RECAPS
1 | We spent our Labor Day morning hiking in Cheyenne Canyon. It's a beautiful spot close to home which makes it super convenient to hop over for a little day hike! I'd been craving some outdoor time, so this helped tide me over until the next adventure.

2 | The details have a special place in my heart. I can't help but spot them and capture them in the moment. I think we so often miss them as we plow straight ahead through life.

3 | I got to hang out with some kiddos this weekend, and it made my heart smile so big. It's a good day when kids want to play with you at the park, watch a movie with you, and ask you to read them bedtime stories.

4 | This Sunday marked the beginning of the Broncos' football season. For the rest of the season, you can find me at the Mayberrys' house on football days. I'll be cheering for Peyton Manning, and Beth will be yelling at the TV and praying the Broncos never lose. ;)

FAVORITE FINDS

WHAT WERE YOUR WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS?

CURRENTLY | VOL. 6

READING | Let's be honest. I haven't gotten around to reading too much this summer. I'm in the midst of reading the Maze Runner series as well as Fahrenheit 451. I also really want to read Savor by Shauna Niequist. We'll put that on my list to read by the end of the year. ;)

MISSING | Outdoor adventures in Tennessee. Back home I liked to do a lot of kayaking as the summer begins to cool off and we head into autumn. It's the perfect weather for heading out to the lake and paddling for a day. Some friends and I are trying to make some adventure plans for autumn in Colorado, and I'm really looking forward to those!

CRAVING | Caramel lattes. All day every day. So far in my coffee shop exploration, I've found I love them best at Wild Goose Meeting House in downtown Colorado Springs.

LISTENING | Ben Rector's new album has been on repeat for the past two weeks. I also can't stop listening to a couple new singles from Jon Mclaughlin. Oh and this gem featuring Ed Sheeran. I'm pretty sure anything he sings is pure gold. What are you listening to these days?

WATCHING | Doctor Who! #nerdalert The newest season is out on Netflix finally, so the Mayberrys and I get together to watch an episode or two when we can. :)

HOLDERS NOT FOLDERS | NEW

Happy Wednesday, brave hearts! Can you believe we are already halfway through the work week? I love long weekends. :) We're moving on to our sixth week in the new Instagram challenge with #holdersnotfolders. We thought it would be fun to end the summer with a chance to think creatively, work on our photography skills, and build an even stronger community within #holdernotfolders. You guys are so great, and we love that you are using this little hashtag that reminds us to reach out to others and build community instead of simply folding into ourselves. You all have been posting some really beautiful photos lately, and I so enjoy scrolling through our little hashtag. Thanks for letting us be a part of your Insta community and for giving us a glimpse into your lives.

Here are a few of my favorite BRIGHT moments from this past week.

This week, your photo prompt is NEW. This week, we are talking about all things NEW. Maybe it's a new season (autumn is just around the corner), or it's a new recipe you tried, or it's something that makes you feel new. It's all up to your interpretation. Give it your best shot!

INSTAGRAM TIP: USE EDITING APPS
There are so many photo editing apps out there, and I know it can sometimes be overwhelming when trying to decide which ones to use. There are two I highly recommend: VSCO and Afterlight. I used Afterlight until I discovered VSCO, and it is a great app with wonderful editing capabilities and various filters options. However, I personally prefer VSCO's simplified setup and beautiful filters. I wrote a post a while back about VSCO being my favorite photo editing app, and I still stand by that! It is extremely user friendly, well designed, and has everything you could want out of a photo editing app.

WEEKEND UPDATE

The party is on Instagram! See more snapshots here.

RECAPS
1 | I've finally found the one that I want. A camera bag, that is. Check out the bag I snagged from Jo Totes! Also, sometimes your best friend makes you stand in front of a fire station for photos and you get really nervous that the alarm is going to go off for some reason and you're going to get yelled at for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I have semi-irrational fears sometimes, it turns out.

2 | Friends who speak your love language are friends you want to keep around. Friends who buy me my own jar of Talenti definitely speak my love language. Gelato for daysssss.

3 | GUYS! Sorry I yelled, but I am still just so excited about going to a balloon festival yesterday morning! Beth and I got up at the crack of dawn to watch tons of hot air balloons take off over Colorado Springs, and it was simply magical. I stood there and kept saying "this is so pretty" and "I love this so much" over and over again. I'm obviously incredibly eloquent, if you couldn't tell.

4 | In case you were wondering, waking up before the sun to head to an event with your best friend is totally worth it. I've loved all of our summer adventures, and am so excited to head into fall with more fun plans on the calendar.

How was your Labor Day Weekend?

9.04.2015

YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT

It's Friday, people! And it's a holiday weekend, which means you can stay up late all weekend long because you don't have to work on Monday! ;) I'm sure you all have exhilarating plans starting tonight, but before you head off into the wild blue yonder, let me tell you about my latest escapades in the tech gear department: finding the perfect camera bag.

For years, I've carried my camera either in a bulky case or I've thrown it nonchalantly and I admit, a bit carelessly, into my purse. Oh, you're not supposed to do that kind of thing to your nice camera? Oops! Here's the good news. So far the poor thing has survived the treatment it's received, but knowing how clumsy I can be, I thought it was high time to find an alternative mode of transportation for my camera. I've been searching for the perfect camera bag for months and months. If you know anything about me, you know I like to research things before diving in, hence the months and months of searching.

Now I had pretty high standards and a few non-negotiable requirements of a camera bag, and I definitely wasn't going to settle. I wanted a bag that:
1 | Could be worn on the shoulder and as a crossbody.
2 | Had a lot of pockets. Organization, people. I need it.
3 | Had sturdy, protective, and adjustable inserts for safe camera storage.
4 | Had a laptop sleeve.
5 | Was carry-on compatible.

I know, I know. Some might say I'm too needy, but I'd just tell them that I know what I need and what I want and to mind their own business. One fine day this summer I found Jo Totes, and it was love at first sight. The Missy bag met all of my requirements. So I said, "Missy bag, you're the one that I want" and we've lived happily ever after.

Okay, but in all seriousness, this camera bag fit the bill. I've been using it every day for the past two months to tote around my camera and laptop plus a million other things (it has A LOT of pockets). So far I'm very happy with the quality of the material, the size of the bag, and the flexibility to organize the interior in various ways. It's a winner in my book!

Tell me: Are you on the lookout for the perfect camera bag? Check out Jo Totes and the items they have to offer! What are some of your "must haves" in a camera bag? Have any questions about the Missy bag? I'm all ears!
